Nice Dem. Have you been playing all this time? I still haven't maxed out anyone. Maybe once I finish my current Sniper Marksman I'll roll someone on Harbinger.

I'm also in the process of getting myself and a few friends into either X-Wing miniatures or Armada. Both look like good fun.

Eras,

XW and Armada are both incredible table tops.  Very different though.  I play both quite a bit.

X-Wing is more detailed, more nuanced. Takes a lot longer to play I feel like.  More ho humming over decisions.  Less forgiving of screw ups.  A couple wrong moves in X-Wing can doom you.

Armada is more forgiving and more lax gameplay.  Much of the distance measuring and the way movement/maneuvering ships is handled is more lenient.  For me anyway, Armada battles tend to go a little quicker.  There is less critical decision making to be made and a screw up won't blow your chances immediately.

As far as the quality of models, both are great.  X-Wing is a little more detailed obviously, and the fact that the Fighter Groups in Armada do not come pre-painted at all is worth noting for some.

I love both, X-Wing is my preference though.  They are constantly enriching both with new Waves of ship lines.  X-Wing is a few years older than Armada though, so there's much less to choose from (or less expensive to own it all, depending on your angle!).

The X-Wing community of players I've experienced so far has been great.  Very active and constantly growing.

You won't regret either though.  Loads of fun.

Oh, I've done an unhealthy amount of research and waffling over the last week. Funny that you say X-Wing takes longer to play and has tougher decisions. My friends and I were thinking Armada would have been that way more than X-Wing.

I ended up buying the X-Wing Core Set, 1 X, 1 Y, 1 TIE/adv, 1 TIE/b, Falcon, and Slave I.

My friends and I would have preferred Armada, but the problem is playing space. I don't have a 6'x3' space and would need to play on my floor if hosting, which is less than ideal. Is that the size area you use? It seems so huge. I've seen discussions where people say they get by easily with 5'x3' or even 4'x3'.

I just really liked the idea of fleets duking it out and being a slower, more strategic game. I haven't opened the X-Wing things yet and could just return them. I'm just worried about play space. One of my friends said he wouldn't mind having to play on the floor, but I don't know if I'm comfortable with asking that of my guests.

Armada I feel moves a bit faster because the way motion of pieces is captured in the turn based execution it is much more basic.  Youre ships are in constant motion to speak, that you set your speed, and changing your speed is an action, which can cost you the opportunity to execute other actions.  When you go to move, you're moving the distance that your speed is set at, but you use that funky ruler gauge to choose how many 15degree tics left or right you are moving as well.  And this is how you turn/wiggle/change course etc.  There's not a whole lot of changing speed amongst the capital ships really.  At least so far that I've played.  The CRV is only ship that has speeds 1-4 right now, so it can actually really make some moves out there, but the VSD for instance is only 1-2.  And it's turning abiltiy is atrocious (necessitating the 6x3 area)

Fighter group movement is more free, and is in any direction just at a regualted distance, and they can generally only attack OR move in their turn, unless youre using special Commands to do both.

You're also only choosing one ships move at a time as you go through thep hases, while in XW you have to choose all your maneuvers at once really in a pre-phase which can make for a bit longer ho-humming period, for me anyways!

Falcon and Slave I are such great ships in that game even still after 7 Waves of new pieces.  People still fly TIE F swarms sometimes.  Ive actually see people send 7 TF Academy Pilots out there in a 100pt squad once in awhile.  It's annoying as hell though!   The third faction Scum & Villainy has really opened the game up as well. YWs have some great potential for them.

I play Armada on a 6x3 with a 300pt fleet.  It can tend to be pretty big, but the Rebel ships are way out classed and need to try to keep a distance.  Dance around and use finess and all that.  So if you are Rebs and want to win, you need that 6ft to run and use your maneuverability.  5x3 would work good still, 4x3 is cutting yourself too short though.

If you are gravitating toward Armada, I'd say go for it man.  Neither will disappoint and if it's the grand scale you want, XW will never have that feel for you.

For playing space consider hitting up Home Depot, Lowes or whatever and getting some pre cut sheets, particle board, hard board, plywood etc etc there.  Can prob find something with a finished laminate side.  I just lay 1-2 big sheets on a smaller table to make it work at home.

If youre in a house and have a basement, you can go the step further, buy two sawhorses and then put even larger rigid sheets on that.  I used to have a lego city set up on some until my step-son somehow overran my basement nook ;p

Or you could just go the sawhorse large sheet route in the living room as well for the comforts of civilized living?  Just take it down and throw in closet/under bed when not using?

I do most my online buying from miniaturemarket.com, they have pretty good prices on XW and Armada gear.  Usually 66% of MSRP

+1 to Home Depot.

Chalkboard is pretty inexpensive. The blacktop is great for games too since you can mark it up with chalk for reference points or draw-in terrain. Whiteboard with expo markers have a tendency to get wiped/rubbed out when doing cards/figures/stands.

Hell yeah, I actually use that stuff exactly.  I use a pair of the 2x4s to make a 4x4 for larger Xwing when necessary for Epic battle

I messed around trying to make my own stary background and wasted enough money on materials that I made one last ditch attempt and happened past that stuff for a duh moment.

Worth noting for you Eras, that the next wave of Armada ships includes ISD and Home One / MC80.  There are no Large base ships yet in the game, only small (Gladiator SD, CRV, FRG) and medium (VSD, RAF) right now.  Those will both be Large.  The scale will become SLIGHTLY busted, as the ISD will only measure about 1.3 max longer than VSD.  But still- Fantasy Flight doesn't do anything half assed really it seems. (They even sent me missing DUST Tactics pieces long after they no longer held the license/produced the parts)

It essentially mimics everything we'd ever dreamt of in terms of fleet scale battle simulation really.  On another note, as in Xwing you use dice for defense, in Armada you use Tokens in sync with upgrade cards.  The tokens can be refreshed after each round, or spent forever through excessive use in a single round.  As of now, there is Evade (cancels or forces reroll of attack die depending on range), Redirect (disperses damage to other shield zones), and Brace (halves total die roll dmg right off bat).

There are also screen tactics employed widely through fighter usage.  You engage enemy squadrons by being near them, most basic types of fighters MUST attack any fighter group that ENGAGES them before it can move away.  In this way you can obstruct enemy bombers, or they may use fighters with Escort ability to guide Bombers through.  Etc.

I know X-Wing has a module on Vassal, if that's what you mean Gall. Not sure about Armada.

The chalkboard idea is brilliant, I may do that. I think I'm regretting my X-Wing purchase since I didn't really consider just getting some cheap plywood or chalkboard that I could set up and take down as needed. I may end up selling everything I bought for an acceptable loss and then investing in Armada. It really does seem like everything we've always dreamed of. I would still love a turn-based PC game involving fleets. I've played a little EoW lately, and I used to love Rebellion, but it just doesn't do it for me.

As Eidolon and I have exchanged before, the impression with Armada is that somebody on that Fantasy Flight Games development team is either really good, or was really active in the AOL glory days, because the rules are carbon copied versions of what we're all used to. Yet, traditional naval combat games have done similar stuff, in addition to other turn-based tabletops involving complex movement and weapons fire like BattleTech.

I would say the game largely depends on what gaming community you have in your local stores. A solid group game can be fun no matter what game is played.

I would say if you're just hosting games at home and want to get 3-5 players in on the action, you could probably get away with:
Core Set ($67)
Extra VSD ($28)
Extra Imperial Fighters ($18)
Extra NEB ($15)
Extra CORV ($15)
Extra Rebel Fighters ($19)
Rogues & Villains ($29)

$200 after shipping and handling, more if you go the DIY route with gameboards and custom scene pieces. Oh yeah, and a good amount of time/cost associated with painting some of the expansion pieces. Have fuN!

Not the cheapest game to get into, but probably way better than X-Wing in terms of value/group games/overall experience.

At some point, expect somebody to drop $2000 to recreate the Battle of Endor. You know it's going to happen. =)
