Episode I - Rendezvous on Naboo
« on: December 28, 2009, 09:47:30 PM »
The Naboo crisis is over, but its effects continue to be felt throughout the galaxy.  Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn lies dead in Naboo's capital, Theed, at the hands of an unknown warrior in the aftermath of the first known encounter between Jedi and Sith in a millennium.  His killer is also dead, felled by Jinn's then-apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Now a Jedi Knight in his own right, Kenobi has secured the Jedi High Council's reluctant approval to take young Anakin Skywaler as his first padawan learner.  Kenobi, like his slain master, believes Skywalker may be the Chosen One, the Jedi destined to bring balance to the Force.  But first Kenobi must help his undisciplined, idealistic apprentice, who still bears the scars of slavery, find his own balance.  To that end, both are preparing to return to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to begin the boy's training.

The Trade Federation's droid army and orbital battleships have been withdrawn from Naboo, and its viceroy, Nute Gunray, and his deputies have been arrested and sent to Coruscant to stand trial for their crimes.  Padme Amidala, the Queen of Naboo, has regained her throne.  Senator Palpatine, previously the representative of Naboo and its surrounding sector in the Galactic Senate, has secured election as the Republic's new Supreme Chancellor.  He has returned to his homeworld to join Amidala and the Jedi Council in observing Jinn's funeral and a victory celebration in Theed.

The funeral and celebration, however, are not the only reasons for the Jedi Council's unprecedented presence en masse.  While the galactic public is aware of the events of the invasion, the involvement of the long-dormant Sith Order has not been revealed--only Kenobi, Amidala, the Jedi Council, and Palpatine know the complete account, and each has agreed to keep secret this alarming development.  Suspecting that the Sith Lords must operate in pairs, the Chancellor and Jedi Council are preparing to assemble a task force to investigate and hunt down the mysterious phantom menace.

On Rhen Var, in the Outer Rim
32 years before the Battle of Yavin

The latest in an endless series of violent snowstorms swirled across Rhen Var's glaciated surface.  The blizzard was enough to obscure even goggled eyesight beyond a few meters, but the combination of a homing beacon and the heat signatures of the Jedi archaeologist and his dozen Whiphid laborers allowed the crew of his transport to track his movements.

It was by that method that the Consular-class space cruiser Messenger IX had descended from orbit and precisely located their passenger at the base of the ancient citadel.  Despite the urgency implied by their arrival--almost two full weeks ahead of schedule--the Jedi paused only briefly to look up as the crimson-painted diplomatic courier circled overhead on its decent toward a nearby hill.   Whatever the present matter was, it could wait, he reasoned.  History was his focus.

An ancient structure whose origins were long since lost, the snowed-in citadel was thought by some scholars to be an early Jedi temple.  The Jedi Order, for their part, held that it was more likely a Sith tomb.  Examining it at last for himself, the Jedi archaeologist tentatively concurred--several aspects of its architecture were undoubtedly similar to mortuary monuments on Korriban, the graveyard planet of the Sith lords.

Not that I'll ever be able to make a direct comparison, the Jedi thought, scoffing at the Order's continued reluctance to grant him access to the heart of the former Sith Empire.  Days before departing Coruscant for this expedition, he had made his annual application to study on Korriban, Vjun, Ziost, or any of the historic Sith throneworlds.  It had only taken hours for the Council of First Knowledge to deny his request.  "Too dangerous," Master Vilbum, the Caretaker, had briskly remarked.

But his intuition told him that he was nevertheless on the verge of a great discovery, or at least a great somethingThis planet's ice and snow can not keep its secrets forever, he mused optimistically.  But was there more to his anxiety than this dig alone?  He could not be sure, but neither could he simply dismiss the premonition.  It clung to him like Rhen Var's chilled wind.

The planet was known to have once been a fertile paradise filled with vegetation and wild life.  An atmospheric cataclysm millennia ago had turned it into a frigid world of frozen tundra and snowswept mountains.  After the Great Sith War, former Jedi-turned-Dark Lord of the Sith Ulic Qel-Droma had sought refuge on Rhen Var, and there trained Vima Sunrider in the ways of the Force.  Qel-Droma ultimately found peace in the snowy wastes, and was redeemed prior to his murder.

Somewhere on this planet is the site where those two titans of Jedi history lived and trained, he thought.  And where one died.

His thoughts were interrupted by the intrusion of a panicked mechanical voice, one instantly recognizable throughout the known galaxy as the fussy call of a protocol droid.  Despite his annoyance at the distraction, he couldn't help but be amused--it was just like his crew to send poor Ninepio out into the storm to find him.

“Master Barca! Oh, come quickly!  Do come quickly—my joints are freezing up!  A great battle has occurred!”

The Jedi put aside his tools and turned away from the base of the citadel's outer wall to face the snow-covered droid.  Although ordinarily conditioned to dismiss the automaton, the seriousness of its last statement was enough to warrant a response.  Lifting his goggles and removing the heavy scarf from around his nose and mouth, Wils Barca waved the droid over.  "What's all this?"

“Oh, Master Barca!  The captain requests you return to the ship at once!”

The Jedi nodded dismissively, familiar with that exhortation.  “You said a battle...?”

“I am told it was quite horrible--one for your history books!  Naboo invaded!  And the Jedi--”

He held up his hand, stopping the droid's overexcited report.  Naboo was a peaceful planet with few enemies.  In any case, an attack on their sovereignty would be dealt with by the Jedi and the Republic.  It was hardly worth mentioning to him.  He turned, pointedly ignoring the droid, and resumed his work.

“Oh, Master Barca, please!  The High Council has summoned you to Naboo at once!”

He turned quickly back towards the droid, his eyes narrow.  While he ordinarily wouldn't put it past his good-humored Judicial Force crew to conspire to end this backwater assignment early, they knew him well enough to know that fabricating a communique would be too much.  “The Jedi High Council?  Are you certain?”  It seemed a redundant question to ask a computer.

“Yes, sir!  You were recommended by the Caretaker of First Knowledge himself!”

He could have laughed, but settled for a smirk as he picked up his tools.  The Council seemed to have a deaf ear when it came to his research, but now his presence was requested because of such research?  “All right, all right, Ninepio.  I'm convinced--let's go.”

---

The spearmaster of the Whiphid tribe of laborers and excavators stood watching as his Jedi friend departed, puzzled by a heart-dropping sense of loss as the vessel gathered speed.  The Jedi had left him to conclude the day's excavations, tag their finds, and disassemble their camp before a second transport arrived.  But alongside the pride that came with this added responsibility, he couldn't help feeling somehow defeated.  What was it that was gone?  What was it he had felt in the Jedi's presence?  Something like safety, he remembered; a sense of protection and certainty.  Now it dwindled in the distance with the fast-moving starship.

He felt strangely alone.

The moist morning air gushed through her lungs as she now sprinted across the open field.  There was a crest coming up, a divet in the landscape; at the precipice with knees beant she lept forward, weightless, as if the wind were carrying the lithe body for she had jumped an unnatural distance.  But it was not the wind and it was not unnatural, it was in fact the very existence of Nature, of the Force.  The young Twi'lek hit the ground rolling, end over end until she came to a stop, laying on her back gazing breathlessly at sky and sun above.

Several minutes went by before her jogging companion fell to his knees beside her, sucking in huge gulps of air and drenched in sweat.  “I thought you said I'd be able to keep up.”

Smiling sheepishly she sat up.  “Sorry, I guess I got a bit carried away.”

Overhead shuttle after shuttle came into view and disappeared into the the domed cityscape of Theed.  The young Nubian's face turned somber,  “Everything's going to change now, isn't it.”

Jasati got to her feet and offered her friend a hand.  “Everything is always changing.”

After showering and changing out of her jogging outfit and into vestments more suitable a Jedi student, Jasati made her daily trip to the infirmary.  She winced slightly as the bandages were removed from both her arms, fingers to elbows, revealing mangled skin and singed flesh.  For the third time she declined the doctor's offer for an anesthetic, she considered this a lesson.

Had she been on Coruscant at the Jedi Temple, it was likely her wounds would have been tended to by a Jedi Healer.  On Naboo, however, she relied on the science of medicine, daily bacta treatments, and the noble members of the medical profession.

“You're recovering nicely, a couple more days and you won't need to see me anymore.”  The older gentleman smiled at her.  “There may be minimal scarring, but hardly noticeable.”  New bandages were wrapped around her arms and finally she allowed herself to focus on what he was saying.

Gingerly she eased herself into the dark brown Jedi robe, usually she had the sleeves folded up a ways to give her arms freer movement, but now she made sure they fell even to her fingertips.  With a quiet word of thanks, Jasati left the infirmary.

Waiting outside the infirmary for her was her young Nubian friend.  It wasn't fair really to call him young, he wasn't that much younger than she, and had participated in just as many dangerous campaigns against the Trade Federation's occupation.  As much as her training dictated she should be wary of deep attachments to her peers, she valued his friendship and respected him as a warrior.  “Tulin, you didn't have to wait for me.”

He pushed off against the wall and shoved his hands into his gray uniform trousers.  “Not much else to do.  Classes won't start again for a few days.  How about some lunch?”

Jasati rocked slightly on her feet, trying to decide between the things she should do and the things she wanted to do.  “I should probably meditate, I've been neglectful of that lately.”

Tulin's boyishly handsome faced twisted into one of mock indignation.  “Special No. 4 or sitting alone pondering the Universe.  The Chef will be deeply hurt by this, you know.”

“Oh,”  she frowned deeply.  “Special No. 4 is my favorite, the extra lumps...  I guess I could just put in some extra time this evening.”  In truth Jasati had felt lonely since the passing of her Master.

“Not going to Master Jinn's funeral then?”  he asked her as they walked down the massive open-air corridors.

Jasati shook her head slightly,  “I only knew of him.”  Not to mention the affair was likely to be a Who's Who of Jedi Masters, it would be awkward for any young Padawan.

~ * ~

Blue fingers tore apart the bread and dunked it generously into the lumpy sauce.  Her earlier sarcasm was feigned at best, Jasati really did enjoy Nubian food.  Though she arrived at the school on a low note, she had made the most of it; and when the Trade Federation had invaded, she had done her duty  by the Republic and the Jedi.  She could only wonder...

“So do you think you'll be headed back to Coruscant soon?”  Tulin had put a voice to her thoughts.

“Maybe.”  Jasati frowned and pushed her plate away, wrestling with the different possible outcomes of the next few days.  “Or maybe they'll forget I'm even here.”

“I doubt that,”  Tulin smirked as he picked up the plates and stacked them onto the refuse carts.  “We should do some target practice later, help keep your arms loose.”

The Twi'lek got to her feet, smoothing out her robes as she did.  “Maybe tomorrow.  Being an undisciplined student is not the preferred way to get them to notice you.”  Referring back to her admission at being neglectful in her meditation practices.  Her meandering thoughts were likely the punishment of a mind lacking in discipline, as was her likely inappropriate attachment to her Nubian friend.
