Okay, we're going to try and shake off the boredom with some pre-combat training to get everybody warmed up to the rules.

First off, here's the System Grid.


Concise Combat Rules

1. Damage is calculated by multiplying the quotient of the UCR difference between two targets. If the attacker's UCR is greater than the defender's then the attacker does full damage. If the attacker's UCR is lower than the Defender's then you simply make the following calculation: Raw Damage x (Attacker UCR / Defender UCR) = Total Damage.

2. Ions affect Shields first, then Systems.

3. Auxiliary Craft may form GROUPS of 6 aux craft. Aux Groups may combine Durability and Damage such that they are operating as a "single" entity.

4. No more than 3 Starfighter Squadrons can engage another Starfighter Squadron; no more than 2 Aux Groups can engage another Aux Group; no more than 6 Aux Groups can engage a single Starfighter Squadron; no more than 2 Starfighter Squadrons can engage 1 Aux Group.

5. Combat Space Patrol for SF Squads or AUX Groups must be assigned on a SHIP SPECIFIC basis. SF Squads on CSP must be engaged by at least 1 opposing SF Squad in order for the SF CSP to be neutralized. AUX Groups on CSP must be engaged by at least 1 opposing AUX Group for the AUX CSP to be neutralized. (Engagements must happen on a 1:1 basis). If a ship has no AUX CSP, then AUX can freely attack that vessel, even if it has SF CSP; vice versa for SFs attacking ships with AUX CSP.

6. All movement is 1 grid per turn. No diagonal movement is allowed. Capital Ships may fire at adjacent grids but SF and AUX may only attack targets in the same grid. Fleets must exit hyperspace in Deep Space Zones but can immediately move into the system afterwards.

7. Deep Space Zones are "no man's land" areas. No combat is allowed to take place there.

8. Launch Bays are capable of launching 1 SF Squad or 1 AUX Group at a time. Recalls are infinite.

KING OF THE HILL
This challenge is OPEN, effectively immediately, and will run for 10 days.

Rules
1. Players will utilize COMMON TECHNOLOGY only for this challenge.
2. Player Fleets are limited to 3000 Command Points.
3. All Fleets will exit in a Deep Space Zone to start out.
4. For every 1 day a player keeps his Fleet in LOW ORBIT, they get 1 King Point for every 1 Command Point in their Fleet remaining there.
5. The player with the most King Points by July 21st wins.

   The pirate incursion in to the remote world would not go unchallenged.  They'd come to pillage on the infrequent and vulnerable yet crucial freighters that came to visit the tiny life giving planet.  On the fringes of known settled worlds, their meager defense fleet was composed of much smaller vessels than those the raiders had brought, but standing between the barbarians and their own homes, the defenders would fight on valiantly to protect their families.

   A small squadron of light warships were patrolling on the outskirts of the System. Aboard the lead frigate, the crew was composed of predominantly Gran and Ithorians, the two species of whom the majority of the small worlds settlers were, most of which became simple farmers, traders or builders.  Aside from commanding officers, most of the planetary defense personnel were compulsory service members doing their obligatory duty to their little society.  Aboard the bridge, the relative mundane morning shift erupted in to commotion,

  "Sir! Our perimeter has been penetrated!  Sensors indicate two heavy warships emerging in sector DS-S!" a pale stout triple eyed Gran called out from his station worriedly in his nasally speech.

  The ship's Ithorian commander slowly rotated his long neck from his captain's chair arm-mounted data screen, his far spaced eyes widening as he moaned out a lament and his orders,

  "Fooools.. the council.  Iee warned, ouuur patrolssss.. tooo distant annnd equip, ment, in-effect-tual.  Deeeploooy heeavy support.  Mooove tooo Lo Orrbit.  Tight Attock Forrrmation.  Transmit distress, across all, channels.  Short and long, range."

  The numerous couple dozen bridge occupants sprung to action, slowly lumbering or hastily waddling about as they frantically prepared for the first combat many had ever seen.  A few dozen smaller craft began emerging from the frigate squadrons bays. . .

Commander Caerbannog

The rogue fleet of Commander Caerbannog emerged from hyperspace into the deep space zone designated "N" and proceeded towards the target planet of Combat Simulator with slow precision. Once reaching high orbit, a pair of starfighters were sent ahead to scout low orbit and establish a position that would be dominated by the most awesome of Commanders. The task force raised all combat alertness to high.

The fleet moved into High Orbit and launched some starfighters for protection detail. King Robert opened a general communications channel to the system: "Attention all ye scoundrels who dare to lay claim on these celestial waters... I am King Robert, the rightful King of the Hill! Look upon my fleet and despair!"

   "Additional ships emerging from hyperspace nearly on top of us!," the Gran comm officer exclaimed.

   "Evvaasssivee Maaneeuuvveerrss," the Ithorian Captain groaned as he more aptly operated a touch screen control station from his command chair.  "Ennggaaaaggeee!" he cried out shortly after.

   The tightly grouped Frigates scattered as two much larger warships emerged dangerously close.  Their batteries opened up immediately upon the heavy cruisers in their midst as more support emerged from their bays and joined the ensuing fray. . .

Commander Caerbannog

The Commander slammed his fist on the console at the realization they had dropped on a waiting fleet. Quickly he began giving orders to strike, focusing on the nearest frigate with all the cruiser's fury. Squadrons were launched to begin picking away at the enemy screen in an attempt to draw fire away from the larger ship. All hell had broken loose up in there!

Summary:
All ships move to LO-N and attack.
5 squadrons launch.
4 squadrons attack.
2 squadrons become CSP for PBC.
1 squadron returns fire and dies.

Quick note to the participants:

LOW ORBIT is a single, wrap-around grid space. There's no need to distinguish between N,S,W, or E for Low Orbit. Just wanted to clarify that in case anyone is confused.

Noticing that some other rogue elements had already begun battling, the Dreadstar Pirate Fleet selecting the largest target available - the VNSD Anthrax, and opened fire. The enemy Commander's decision to bring F-1 squadrons to the fight was an intelligent tactical move, but a mistaken strategic one.

"Full broadside! Fire at will!"

    . . .As the Frigates zipped passed the invaders, the rear ship took a heavy beating, it's shielding and armor caving and leaving it drifting helpless after it's engine's suffered several direct hits.  A number of the smaller support ships tussled in a dense fray with belligerents, before the defending force pulled out to regroup, momentarily leaving behind the fracas. . .

The Anthrax began taking fire from another enemy battlegroup, blue light dancing across her shields as they held strong. Caerbannog was no ordinary commander. Space was littered with the bones of those he had vanquished. Remaining strong, he ordered the two large ships to target the latest combatant to join in the party.
