Star Wars Roleplaying game
« on: July 19, 2018, 04:21:30 PM »
Someone explain to me why the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Star Wars Roleplaying game book is retailing for $50-$60. These books should be available for $15 or $20 max.

Is anyone going to actually play it, or is it just going to sit there looking pretty on everyone's shelf\floor\table?

Apparently 2nd edition D&D is experiencing a renaissance due to Stranger Things.

My thoughts are that reprints of the Star Wars RPG have nothing to do with a gaming renaissance, and everything to do with Disney milking the cow.

Hale--I played D&D for a couple of months this year (first time) only because they play every Monday and Wednesday (there's enough people these last few months to have three parties going at once sometimes) and I wanted to learn the D&D 5E rules so I could play Adventures in Middle Earth.

Except that no one (here anyway) actually plays Adventures in Middle Earth. And I doubt anyone will play the SWRPG 30th Anniversary Edition or the new Age of Rebellion\Edge of the Empire\Force and Destiny rpg's either.

I wish rpg's in universes like Star Wars and Hobbit\LOTR (and other cool universes, like Willow or The Matrix) were more popular.

There are also tabletop wargames I would love (the Middle Earth tabletop wargame, or Alien vs. Predator, or the upcoming Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene), except that there's no sense in buying miniatures for games that aren't getting played.

(Have you played any of the above by the way? AME? Original SWRPG or the new Star Wars rpg's? Alien vs. Predator? The only other one that I'm interested in is BattleTech\MechWarrior, but of course this is a big year for BattleTech and maybe I'll actually see that on the calendar eventually.)

I see the AgeofReb/Edge/ForceandDest books and card decks sell out on MiniatureMarket and they disappear at my local game shop at a modest rate, so they're getting played somewheres.  I buy the cool looking books that look more full of planetary than character/campaign infos.  Saw that 30th ed rerelease too and was sort of puzzled by it.  Didn't look in to but wouldn't FFG own the rights to all SW games of this type, you'd think anyway.  Though IDW does publish more kid oriented Star Wars Adventures comic book series while Marvel does the normal comics so, everyone gets a slice I guess!   I see TONS of people young and old play Destiny the card/dice game thing at the game shop though, and have seen comic shops with the grav feed boxes as well so it must be huge.  They have their own ffg pretty ornate binders now so it must sell like hot cakes.

I would play MechWarrior if the models didn't suck.  Even the heroclix style stuff they had awhile ago was always half deformed.

I like the concept of the new Warhammer 40k Imperial Knights subgame where it's more like 1 massive powerful walker vs another, a duel of sorts.  I wish BattleTech/Mechwarrior would do a game like that with larger scaled models of high quality and highly detailed dueling/jousting/dogfighting etc type combat.

All Quiet On The Martian Front keeps getting peripheral pat downs. Some day, maybe in retirement!

On the other hand, with the Alpha Strike boxes you can get 8 boxes of 4 mechs\box (32 mechs total) for $64. $2/mech is hard to beat.

I wish you could buy Rebellion-style minis for Star Wars even though they're smaller\cheaper\inferior to the Armada minis. But $2\ship would be a lot better than $30-$50\ship, and it's all I really need.

Disney saw Warhammer making $$ hand over fist and decided to get in on it. You can't just sell minis for $50/mini, now you have to wait until everyone's bought one or more of each, and then once they've done that, you have to release a Second Edition where you've intentionally changed a couple things on all the minis to force mini addicts to buy new ones. Meanwhile you have to release the exact same minis in different sizes or stances for different games (e.g., Palpatine for Imperial Assault vs. Palpatine for Legion).

Makes me not even want to buy.
