BESPIN DEFENSE FORCE

    The quiet of a typical day in Cloud City was suddenly vanquished by the thunder of battle. The orbital defenses of the gas planet were under attack. The sensors quickly decoded the IFFs of the attacker, revealing it to be a rebel force. The people wondered why a warship of the Old Republic under the rebellion's flag would come here, where no Imperial presence existed, and open fire on their people. A distress signal began transmitting out to anyone who could help as troops prepared for the coming assault.

OOC Note: Hale, can I get a ruling on this as to whether or not I can just SL out the rest of it. I got 2 more posts moving next to the city, then they are either going to surrender or im going to target the gravitational stabilizers on the bottom of the city and send the whole thing crashing into the depths of the gas giants core. So basically im asking you what choice this NPC civilization is going to choose so I can SL it out, if that is ok. Either way this battle will end without my troops ever setting foot in the city, either they surrender or they die. There is no grey area in this choice. I can actually make a battle post doing this if need be, but I think it would be way more interesting in SL format. Thank you for your time.

GM RULING
Bespin is unique because all of the settlements are floating. The same goes with Ithor and I'm sure a dozen other systems not listed in the game. In the revised ground rules, it states that there is a "Air" aspect of the Ground Grid, as well as the "Surface" level of the ground grid, but both are interchangeable in terms of units combating each other. This is your "IN" as far as you're concerned, regarding battling it out with the Ground units. Targeting the stabilizers on the bottom of the facilities is NOT ALLOWED. You're going to have to take your VNSD to the Ground Grid-Air and battle it out with the facilities you want to destroy by docking with them and treating it like it's a boarding operation...or siege them and blow them up. You can SL it out if you want, but I expect there to be some blood. That Alpha has 5000 soldiers alone.

I don't want people to expect that PDFs are going to surrender at the first sign of a Star Destroyer at every corner just because that's what happened at Dantooine. Players should expect that they'll have to destroy both Space AND Ground units in order to take over a planet. The galaxy is in chaos and people (neutral PDFs) would prefer liberty or die fighting for it. None of this "I nuked the space, therefore the ground will surrender" logic will prevail.

Secondly, you are a member of the Rebel Alliance and a TRAITOR! Why would somebody who believes in the Rebel Dream nuke an entire city? ;D

    As the Old Republic ship descended into the atmosphere, the people of the city began to panic. The most influential Imperial loyalists of the garrison began loading their families into the shuttles in order to escape the incoming threat to the city. Already rebel operatives were attempting to sabotage the city's repulsor lifts in order to scare the garrison into submission. It would not be long now before the rebel troopers began their charge on the city.

Shuttles poured passed the ship as imperial loyalists tried desperately to flee the planet. Panic was in the air, Arterius could smell it, and it was exactly the intended response he was looking for.

"Let them go, I have no use for prisoners."
"Roger that sir, we are coming into formation along side of the city now. Are nose is close enough to jump off of it sir."
"Excellent job Lt. Communications, I need a link to the central command center."
"Ready when you are sir."

"Bespin command this is Captain Arterius of the Rebellion Alliance against the empire. As you can see, you are outnumbered, out maneuvered, out classed, and with but a single well placed shot I could send this entire city falling into the crushing depths of the planets core. I want you to forever remember this moment, for had this been an imperial fleet, it is exactly what would have happened here. Your men in orbit would be dead or worse, and every living thing in this system exterminated. Had the remnants of the Galactic Republic shown up, the results would have been much the same due to the once imperial garrisons residing in your city. And as it has been demonstrated quite clearly to you, you are woefully under prepared for either event. I have but a single ship and with one pass your space defenses were wiped away. I invite you to meet me on your main landing dock to discuss cessation of hostilities between our people. And fear not for your comrades in orbit, you will find their ships quite unharmed and their crews intact, which if they are even near competent should be back online enough to get them back to their docks about now. So let us not continue this barbaric charade, and we can discuss things as civilized beings shall we?"

With that the communications were terminated and a few shuttles were dispatched with medical and technical crews to help the beleaguered defense vessels back to dry dock. Meanwhile the massive Idenna maneuvered into position with its main hanger port dropped directly onto the landing pad. Almost immediately 1000 troopers disembarked from the ship, their weapons held at attention status but ready to open fire at the slightest sign of hostilities. In a perfect, almost imperial like square formation they continued to march down the hanger ramp. In the middle of the 4 squad formation stood the the captain. It was there, unarmed, he took a breath and awaited the Bespin response. Inside the hanger the remaining soldiers made it apparent the 1000 on the ground were not the only ones on board.

    The military commanders of Bespin listened to the demands of the invaders and began discussions among themselves. Since the fall of the Emperor, the situation on Bespin had been very much worsened. Under sovereignty, the wealth of the planet had grown. After the Imperial Garrison had been placed there by Darth Vader, business had maintained consistent, but business dealings had been restricted to licensed contractors of the Empire. Now, with the galaxy in turmoil, there were few stable governments with the capital to maintain consistent business. They wondered, would this Rebel Alliance have enough structure to line their pockets with a recognized currency, or would they be surrendering to a small warlord who would hamper their business by regulating further who they could deal with. Furthermore, there were still Imperials in Cloud City, and they still maintained control of the ordinance. For some of them, just rolling over would not come easy.

Colonel: "They are bluffing. Without the city there would be no strategic or economic value here. They will have wasted their time coming here, and the losses politically would be substantial throughout the galaxy."

Major: "General, you have been in command of Bespin since before the Battle of Endor. We have five hundred squads who are loyal to you. We estimate the enemy have similar numbers in addition to air superiority."

General: "Bespin is mine, and I will not see it taken by some space jockey without a fight. Ready the men. As long as I'm standing, I will not yield to a Captain!"

Captain Arterius stood among the formation of his troops but still receiving no reply from the bespin military command. Slowly he pulled his communicator and signaled back to command informing them of the situation.

"Sir, it seems they wish a fight."
"Id prefer to have this system join us without casualties. I have a small surprise awaiting back at command HQ, perhaps they simply need a bit more encouraging. If they still refuse, then they are foolish, exterminate them."
"Sir?"
"I have no time to deal with imperial protocol. The emperor is dead, if they so choose to continue to follow his example, they can die with him as well."
"And for the civilian population sir?"
"I trust your judgement captain."
"Aye aye sir."

With that the captain replaced his communicator on his hip and continued to wait.

    The arrival of another ship, likely filled with soldiers, was enough to force the Governor into submission. The Imperial loyalists began to melt away into the populous and hide until they could manage safe passage out of the system. With posts being abandoned by the hundreds, the only thing left for Bespin to do was surrender.

OOC Note: Thank you Dem for running the PDF for me. I greatly appreciate it.

The captain remained in the small make shift encampment on the landing deck of the city. Throughout the entire time the only sign that any life was even in the city were the handful of small anti-infantry emplacements outside the main military building, that would train their guns around from time to time surveying the enemy forces. Suddenly a signal from the Nefrane arriving in orbit broke the unending monotony of the situation. At almost the same time the main bunker door to the city opened and a lone corporal walked out, nervously approaching Arterius and his men. Surprisingly none of the soldiers even bothered to raise a weapon to him.

"Captain Arterius, I am Corporal Saunders, first fifteenth imperial guard regiment. On behalf of my superiors I am authorized to inform you the city forces surrender. Cloud city is yours sir."
"Right on schedule. Please inform your cowardly superiors that any who wish to return to imperial space may do so now, without fear of consequence or reprisal. Shuttles will be made available. And seeing as you were the only soldier here with enough balls to come and greet us, consider yourself in charge of any remaining security forces.
