Title: Might need to sunset this version of the forum soon
Post by: SWSF Hoppus on September 10, 2019, 12:58:32 PM
A few things.

The PHP version this forum is written in will no longer be supported shortly. Changing versions to a newer one may break things. I don't want to mess with the forum software or PHP.

I am considering rewriting the forum in my own software over the next few months. I would try to transition everything over as best as I can but I'm not certain I can do it 100% (at least without stripping out styling, embedded images, etc).

Thing 2: our old domain name is available again (swsimforum.com) if we want to buy it and migrate back over. I bought this one b/c we lost contact with the person who was holding it and I was no longer able to point the old name to our servers.

Anyway, more to come regarding forum software. I will also look and see if there is something else worth using. Rolling our own will allow us to customize things more for our games, though, and may be a worthwhile investment of time.

how much to buy swsimforum.com ?

My personal feelings lean towards going with your own software for the reasons stated at the end, allowing more potential customization and what not.

In terms of losing style or embedded images, those issues don't dissuade me personally.  Anything more than a couple years old for me in embedded images would be photobucket/scratched anyways so.

The styling loss could be a negative effect on the long established storylines of Syren/Med which is something to keep in mind and hear them out on.  If spacing would be retained.. is less of a problem I'd imagine, only losing color/italicized/bolds etc then?

..if it leads to an embedded authenticated dice rolling app tho..  BLOW IT UP BABY! ;p

Yeah, i should be able to keep spacing and such intact, and re-associate posts to accounts in the new thing.

The first version I would shoot for would be a simple forum, then we would add the features we want one at a time.

Hop, you do what must be done. If everything can be migrated, great, and if not then we'll deal.

Well I'll definitely have multiple backups of all data, so no worries there. One way or another things will continue.

I just bought swsimforum.com again, so we will be returning to our old home in near future!

No, if i roll the software myself its going to be pretty minimalistic... ill look for some other php-friendly alternatives as back up plan though.

Hmmm looks we can upgrade to a release candidate version of 2.1 of the same software and it will be compatible. We'd lose some mods like the post editor (letting you style shit etc).

I am unsure what to do. It will take some time commitment to write a simple forum software. But then our future is in our hands after the initial investment, and we can customize shit and add things in ways that are not an option with the other softwares.

Yeah, been thinking about this since yesterday. I think it is best to write up our own software.

Version 1: boards, topics, replies, visual post editor, login/logout.

I think we can get this out by October 1st if I prioritize my free time...

Sounds good Jarrito!

Tick tock, again lemme know what if anything I can do to help your workload/costs for it.

Well hosting costs will probably go up a bit. That is one benefit to the current set up. I think I can get things running well for as little as $5/month (I think I pay $35 for 2 years of hosting now, so its more :P)

That is one consideration here... I like xenforo, it looks decent, but it costs $160. That might be worth it for having something stable and supported by other folks.

But again, if I roll our own, it does leave the door open for us to do other cool shit and build in a lot of custom behavior. One of the first things I'd want to do is integrate map views for each post for example, so you can "view current map" for each post and get a nice visualization :D

Possible good news, I think I can upgrade the forum software to something that won't break with the PHP version change. I'll keep you posted.

I will donate money!

But I suggest buying the other domain anyway. It may lead some oldtimers here.

I switched to another theme let me know if shit still looks broke.

You may need to do a "hard refresh". Hold ctrl/cmd on Mac and hit refresh.
